Boonsboro Family Worship Center

A History of Honor

1941 – 2011

In 1939, Eugene B Wyand, was called by God to start a church in Boonsboro, Md, with his wife Jennie, and his seven year old son, Benjamin. They began with prayer meetings in different homes, street meetings and tent revivals held in the Boonsboro area. In 1940, a lot was purchased at 145 Lakin Avenue, and in 1941 a church building was built and the Tri-State Church of God (later called the Boonsboro Family Worship Center) was founded with between 25 and 35 members.

In 1967, Reverend Wyand retired and the Reverend James J. Caldwell from Elkton, Maryland was called to pastor the church. The church continued to have a steady growth, resulting in the expansion in the spring of 1969 which gave the old church building the appearance it has today. In 1976, Reverend Caldwell felt led to accept the pastorate at the Crisfield Church of God and at that time the Reverend Ralph D. Massie from the Annapolis Church of God felt called to the Boonsboro Church. Under his leadership the church purchased 10.4 acres along Alt. Route 40 across from the Bast Funeral Home and with many trials, including the wind blowing the framed building over, the congregation held their first services in the current church building in 1988. There were several more leaders that the Lord sent to work with the Tristate Church of God, leaders such as the Reverend Kisner, Reverend Caldwell returned for another tenure and the Reverend Scott Varney under whose leadership the church name was changed to the Boonsboro Family Worship Center.

On June 19, 2005, the Reverend Jack Payne, his wife Melissa and new born daughter Caitlin arrived ready to see what the Lord had in store for them at this exciting church. At this point the church attendance was at a low point, with around 28 in attendance on their first Sunday. The financial situation looked grim, but God had plans for this church on the hill in Boonsboro.

In October when the Payne’s had a baby dedication service for Caitlin the attendance went over 100, and has not gone below that amount since. By December 2005 all the unsecured debt and financial troubles that had been facing the church had been turned around. With these issues behind us, the church could do nothing but grow.

In January of 1998, under the leadership of Reverend Caldwell, the Tri-State Christian Academy, now known as Boonsboro Christian Academy was started with under 10 children. It has continued to grow, with now over 45 in attendance. In December of 2007 under the leadership of Reverend Payne The Heaven Sent Daycare was opened with under 10 children, and now has over 50 children. In October of 2009 the Daycare was upgraded to a Learning Center upon the completion of all State of Maryland requirements for licensure.

We are very excited about the plans that the Lord has for the Boonsboro Family Worship Center. It is still our vision today as it was in 1941, to seek the lost, and to be a light in our community, never failing to show the love of Christ.
